The Thunderbolt was intentionally sunk for diving purposes and carries a fascinating story beneath the surface. Located several miles south of Marathon the vessel rests upright on the ocean floor and creates an impressive underwater landmark. The structure rises dramatically from the sand with clear lines and open areas that make it both striking and rewarding to explore. Over time the wreck has transformed into an artificial reef attracting a wide variety of marine life and offering an unforgettable deep diving experience for adventurous divers seeking something beyond shallow reefs.
Marine life around the Thunderbolt is abundant and often spectacular. Large resident Goliath groupers call the wreck home along with passing game fish and many reef species. Ocean currents can sometimes influence conditions and when needed the dive plan may shift to a deep reef drift dive nearby. This trip is always conducted as a guided dive to ensure safety and maximize enjoyment for all participants. Enriched air is available and recommended to enhance safety and comfort during the dive. Divers should be aware that descent lines may contain fire coral and fishing gear so protective gloves are suggested. Advance booking is required and the wreck is explored once per trip to maintain safety standards. The minimum age for participation is fifteen years.
