The Woebegone Ocean School program in Jervis Bay offers an eight week adventure designed to inspire children through learning, exploration, and play. Each 90 minute session combines freediving, yoga, meditation, breathwork, and ocean awareness to build confidence in the water and foster a lifelong connection with the sea. The curriculum focuses on practical swimming skills that progress to the use of masks, snorkels, and fins, as well as safe breath holding and duck diving techniques.
Students also learn essential ocean safety, buddy protocols, and the impact of plastic pollution, alongside topics such as shark behaviour, marine mammals, seaweed importance, fish identification, and the Great Southern Reef. Lessons take place in the protected shallow bays of Jervis Bay, providing a safe and beautiful outdoor classroom to explore the wonders of the marine environment. This immersive approach ensures that children gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills while enjoying the natural beauty.
All necessary gear is provided, including premium kids snorkelling equipment and a warm 5mm full length wetsuit, mask, snorkel, and fins, with options to purchase additional dive equipment at discounted rates. The program is structured to accommodate different skill levels, ensuring that every child feels supported as they navigate the water. By fostering a deep respect for marine life, the school prepares the next generation to be stewards of our precious coastal ecosystems.

I had an absolutely fantastic weekend doing my orientation dive (and fun dives) with Ocean Divers at Killary Fjord! From the moment I arrived every member of staff and all the other divers were incredibly welcoming, friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was supportive and relaxed, making it easy to feel comfortable even if youâre just starting out like me (10 dives previously). There were a lot of divers, but each in small groups with their own dive master or dive instructor and grouped together in the OW/AOW courses or fun dives. While I had already done my OW elsewhere, Iâll definitely be doing the advanced course and further dives with these guys as the level of dedication and commitment that goes into making their students be successful divers is visible. Bring a bit of patience for the initial response period if you reach out during a very busy time - itâs hard to respond when youâre always in the water đ but I honestly canât recommend them enough if youâre looking to become a good diver and explore Irelands underwater world with a genuinely lovely group of people.
Iâm doing the drysuit diver course with Oceandivers at the moment. I was having trouble getting my buoyancy right, so had six pool sessions to get it right at no extra charge!! What a crew Oceandivers have. There was no pressure, just take your time and get it right. Dan is always on hand to help you out and the rest of the lads are so helpful. I had my first sea dive for the buoyancy certification today off Dalkey island. It was fantastic!! The extra lessons really paid off. I cannot recommend the Oceandivers crew highly enough. It is and has been a pleasure working with Oceandivers to get my drysuit certification. Canât wait to get back in the water with the crew!!
Did my Open Water course with Ocean Divers and couldnât have asked for a better experience â especially on the trip out to Killary Harbour. Alan and Dan are absolute legends. They keep things calm, clear, and enjoyable from start to finish, and theyâve got a brilliant way of building your confidence without overcomplicating anything. Killary was a cracking spot to dive, and the lads made sure everyone got the most out of it, no matter their level. The whole vibe was relaxed but totally professional â you always felt in safe hands. Already looking forward to coming back for my Advanced course. If youâre thinking of giving diving a go, just book it with these lads. You wonât regret it.
