The Woebegone Ocean School program in Jervis Bay offers an eight week adventure designed to empower children through exploration, learning, and fun in a safe aquatic environment. Each 90 minute session combines freediving, yoga and meditation, breathwork, and ocean awareness to build confidence in the water and foster a lifelong connection with the sea. Students develop practical swimming skills while learning to use masks, snorkels, and fins, and are introduced to safe breath holding and duck diving techniques. The curriculum also covers essential topics such as buddy safety, marine conservation, shark behaviour, marine mammals, fish identification, seaweed significance, the Great Southern Reef, and the impact of plastic pollution. Lessons take place in Jervis Bay's protected shallow bays, providing a secure and inspiring outdoor classroom.
All necessary equipment is provided, including premium kids snorkelling gear and 5mm full length wetsuits, with options for students to purchase dive equipment at discounted rates. Term 1 of 2026 begins the week of February 2, running for eight weeks with classes from 10 am to 11 30 am. Location details are shared weekly through a private Facebook group. Classes proceed in light rain, with extreme weather prompting indoor lessons. The program aims to cultivate ocean knowledge, confidence, and respect, inspiring children to connect with nature and embrace the wonders of the marine world.
