We went because, according to social media, it's one of those "must-see" places if you go to Florence. When we arrived, there was a line of about 20 people outside the shop. We were undecided about waiting, but the line was moving quickly, so we stayed. I don't know if it's the best affogato I've ever had, but it was very tasty, especially the traditional one. The pistachio one wasn't as good. The place has a few tables outside, but they're definitely not enough. There were people eating standing up or sitting on the sidewalk, but no one was complaining; everyone was happy eating their ice cream. I don't consider it an ideal place for children or pets. I definitely recommend it.
Vivoli Il Gelato in Florence is an absolute classic and a true symbol of traditional Italian gelato. The atmosphere is simple and always busy, with the charm of a historic place that puts the focus exactly where it should be the gelato. Service is quick and straightforward, matching the rhythm of the shop. The highlight is the affogato, where hot espresso poured over creamy gelato creates a perfectly balanced contrast between bitterness and sweetness. The gelato itself is rich well crafted and full of flavor easily living up to its worldwide reputation. We spent four days in Florence and went there four times which says everything about how good it is.
No denying that it’s a touristy gelateria, but everyone’s still flocking here for that reason, for the claim that it’s the cradle of gelato. We had two affogatos—an original one and a pistachio one. My recommendation is that don’t bother with the pistachio one: it’s just a tactic to up the price. The shop is crowded. The queue is long but moving fast, so don’t be afraid to line up. You’d better figure out what you want to order before you get to the cashier so as not to waste anymore time.
