Goat Keeping Class for Beginners

The Goat Care and Milking Basics Workshop at Jireh Hills Family Homestead is a two hour hands-on experience suitable for the entire family. This session is designed for beginners who are considering starting their own goat mini-herd as well as for those looking to expand or improve the health of their current herd. Participants will interact with both mama goats and baby kids of different ages while learning about various dairy breeds including Nubian, Nigerian Dwarf, and mini-Nubians. The class covers foundational topics such as milking techniques, hoof trimming, administering medications, and routine herd care. Advanced concepts include breeding schedules, preparing for kidding season, record keeping, pasture management, natural worming, feed, minerals, and the use of herbs and essential oils for goat health. The session can be customized to meet specific group needs and is conducted both indoors and outdoors depending on weather conditions. Attendees will gain practical skills and confidence to care for their goats safely and effectively while also receiving a summary handout and contact list for recommended suppliers.

This interactive workshop emphasizes practical knowledge, hands-on experience, and safety. Participants will learn how to handle animals, maintain a healthy herd, and manage routine chores. The course promotes awareness of animal welfare, record keeping, and sustainable practices. Students are encouraged to ask questions and take notes throughout the session.
