This one-day, eight-hour AIARE Avalanche Rescue course is designed for both new and experienced backcountry travelers. Participants learn companion rescue techniques while practicing realistic field scenarios. Returning students can refine skills with advanced topics including multiple burials, advanced beacon use, and evacuation planning. The course emphasizes safety, hands-on learning, and professional guidance, preparing students to respond effectively in avalanche emergencies. Participants gain practical experience using beacon, shovel, and probe, as well as pre-trip equipment checks. Completion of this course is recommended before taking AIARE 2 or Pro 1 courses, and AIARE suggests refreshing rescue skills at least every other year.
Led by certified instructors, the course takes place in Central Colorado with a maximum of twelve participants. Students receive a certificate of completion and complimentary use of Ortovox gear including beacon, shovel, probe, and backpack. The course can be taken on alpine touring skis, splitboards, or snowshoes, and no prior backcountry experience is required, though basic familiarity with gear is recommended. Safety is the top priority, and instructors guide participants through physically demanding activities while ensuring a controlled, educational environment.
