Step into Portugal’s past with this unforgettable journey through two of its most historic cities Braga and Guimarães. Begin your day in the ancient Roman city of Braga, one of the country’s oldest and most spiritually significant destinations. Visit the magnificent Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, famous for its baroque stairway and panoramic views of the surrounding hills, before exploring the Braga Cathedral, a masterpiece that dates back to the 11th century and stands as one of Portugal’s most important religious monuments. Along the way, you’ll discover how Braga’s blend of Roman, Gothic, and Baroque architecture tells the story of centuries of devotion and cultural evolution. After a leisurely lunch, take some time to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of this vibrant northern city before continuing your adventure.
Your journey then leads to Guimarães, the “Cradle of Portugal” and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the Guimarães Castle, where the foundation of the Portuguese nation began, and visit the nearby Church of São Miguel, said to be where Portugal’s first king was baptized. Wander through the medieval streets, picturesque squares, and beautifully preserved stone houses that bring Portugal’s early history to life. As you stroll through its charming old town, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped back in time. This tour offers the perfect combination of cultural depth, historical insight, and scenic beauty a must do experience for anyone seeking to understand the roots of Portugal’s identity.

Leandro Fernandes is the best private tour guide in Guimaraes. He gave my wife and I a wonderful 3-hour private tour of the Old Town area in Guimaraes. He was both a very personal and passionate about the tour, the history of the town, and the history of Portugal. He brought to life the last thousand plus years of History of Portugal and the influence of Portugal has had on the world. A trip to Giamaraes is not complete without a private tour by Leandro.

A huge thank you to Leandro who was a font of knowledge on our personal guided tour of Guimarães. What an inspirational and engaging guy with an absolute passion for all that is historical not only on the local area, but with Portugal and the world beyond. You taught us so much and went above and beyond to make our day so special. What a wonderful town Guimarães is and thank you for sharing it with us that day. Such a beautiful place steeped in history and amazing architecture. Thank you again Leandro.... We will be back!
Tim

What a wonderful and 100% successful afternoon tour this was for our group. Leandro has a most exceptional presentation: knowledge of history, engagement with his audience, exceptional ability to recall historic facts regarding the every day architecture of the town, exceptional empathy with the geography and history of Portugal and its relationship with world history. But above all, he is a really very nice person with a great sense of humour. .

I must say, Leandro went above and beyond to provide my mother and I a first class experience. This being our first trip to Guimarães, we felt so lucky and blessed to have booked our tour with Leandro. His knowledge of Guimarães (and Portugal broadly), his attention to detail and his impeccable treatment of my mother as a guest in his beautiful city all came together to produce an experience we shall never forget. Thank you Leandro! Guimarães is lucky to have you!

He has deep knowledge in Portugal history and happy to discuss any issues regarding expansion of Portugal empire towards the eastern world. There were old Portuguese settlements in Ayudhaya, former capital of Thailand, and all treaties between Siam(previous name of Thailand) and western countries were done in Portuguese language, evidenced of Portugal merchant’s influence being the first western explorer to Siam. We from NBI are the first Thai and Asian tourists ever in his care and happy to be guided by him to visit historic places of Guimarães..
