This gentle walk follows a flat and easy section of the Levada do Estreito, making it accessible to almost all visitors. The route begins in Garachico and continues toward Estreito de Câmara de Lobos while following the historic Levada do Norte. This levada is one of Madeira’s longest and most vital water channels, originally created to transport abundant water from the north of the island to the drier south. Its construction transformed the southern landscape, turning it greener and enabling agriculture to flourish. Even today, the levada continues to support local farmers by providing essential irrigation for their crops.

As the path unfolds, you pass through cultivated fields filled with vegetables, fruit trees and carefully maintained agricultural terraces. As the landscape transitions toward Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, vineyards become the dominant feature. These vineyards are renowned for producing grapes used in the celebrated Madeira Wine. The trail offers continuous scenic views over Câmara de Lobos and Campanário, blending rural charm with sweeping panoramas of the surrounding valleys.

Great hiking experience, with a lot of diversity.

Very nice hike and easy to walk, very nice views and great insight into local life. There are a couple of places where an extra challenge presents itself: the tunnel through the mountain (you will need some light as the path has some pools of water) and the marking of the trail is a bit sparse but not impossible with a map (having said that, we did go off course and landed at another place, but we were okay with that too). A big part of the hike is in the open so don't forget your sunscreen.

No water on the levada, but still a lovely walk. If you continue you can go for quite a long time, but there are some more dangerous parts.

Entered here and headed West. Mostly easy going with a few sketchy sections. Recommend taking the alternate path when available otherwise its very narrow with overhead obstructions. Huge variety of vegetation, butterflies and birds of prey.

Interesting Levada with breathtaking views. However, the levada path is sometimes narrow. So don't take it if you are very anxious. But often there are sideways which are less narrow.
