This gentle walk begins in Prazeres in the southwest of the island and follows a peaceful levada path toward Ponta do Pargo. The trail moves through quiet rural landscapes where cultivated terraces, small houses and local farms reflect traditional Madeiran life. Early on, the route offers beautiful views over the fishing village of Paul do Mar. As the walk continues, the fertile land displays a rich variety of crops including potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans and fruit trees such as fig, papaya, apple and lemon that thrive in the mild climate.

Further along, the scenery shifts to denser vegetation where tall pines and eucalyptus mark reforested areas. In the wetter sections of the levada, you can spot native species belonging to the Laurissilva Forest including Canarian laurels and endemic laurels. Throughout the journey the landscape remains framed by the mountains to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south, creating a striking contrast of deep green and blue. This relaxed route remains enjoyable year round thanks to its low altitude and gentle terrain.

Beautiful hike with a mix of nature, views, and history! 🌿 The trail zigzags through dramatic landscapes where you can see the forest slowly coming back to life after past fires β€” eucalyptus trees sprouting again and lots of local birdlife along the way. The path feels peaceful, with stunning valley and ocean views at different points. You can finish near the lighthouse for a breathtaking peek at the Atlantic, making it a perfect ending spot. Not too crowded, very rewarding, and full of unique scenery β€” highly recommend for hikers looking for something authentic and scenic.

Beautiful views, flat and can be done in trainersπŸ‘Ÿ If you want to do the round trip from Ponta do Pargo I recommend doing a little research about the path so you don't walk the wrong way.

Great hike along the levada. Terraced hills a couple of cows, and a few foot bridges.

Nice levada trekking. After two hours walk there is the nice restaurant and bar "Carreta". In case of heavy and long rainfall a small river has to be crossed during the trekking.

We really loved this one. Open nature and very different fauna from the rest of the island. We walked the levada from the start and then back via the village. It was a long walk uphill from the village to the start of the levada though. The village itself is very nice and well worth a walk through.
