PR8 Coastal Trail Offers Self-Guided Journey Through Madeira’s Rugged Eastern Peninsula

A self-guided hiking experience along the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço is giving visitors the opportunity to explore one of Madeira’s most dramatic coastal landscapes. Located on the island’s eastern peninsula, the trail showcases volcanic cliffs, sweeping Atlantic views, and a distinctive semi-arid environment that contrasts sharply with Madeira’s lush interior.

The route winds through a protected nature reserve shaped by basalt formations and limestone deposits, where strong coastal winds and sparse vegetation create a strikingly rugged landscape. Along the way, hikers enjoy panoramic viewpoints overlooking the Atlantic Ocean while observing nearby landmarks such as the Desembarcadouro and Farol islets, as well as rare native plants and wildlife found within this protected ecosystem.

The experience includes shared transfers from Funchal, Caniço, Santa Cruz, and Machico. Before beginning the hike, participants receive route guidance and a detailed map, allowing them to explore independently while following the well-marked trail at their own pace.
