This eight hour walk takes you along the striking easternmost tip of Madeira Island, a narrow volcanic peninsula shaped by basalt and some limestone formations. The area is a partial nature reserve and part of the European Natura 2000 network, offering a unique landscape very different from the rest of the island due to its semi arid climate and exposure to northerly winds. As you explore, you will encounter low lying vegetation, with 138 plant species, including 31 endemic to Madeira. The peninsula is also a haven for birdlife, including Berthelot's pipit, goldfinch, common canary, common kestrel, and protected seabirds such as Cory's shearwater, storm petrel, Bulwer's petrel, and common tern. There is also the chance of spotting the rare monk seal at sea. Along the trail, breathtaking views open up to both the North and South coasts of Madeira, with the Desertas Islands visible to the south and Porto Santo Island to the north. The walk concludes at Casa Sardinha, where Forest Rangers work to protect the Madeira Natural Park, offering a brief rest before returning along the same scenic route. This tour blends nature, wildlife observation, and stunning coastal scenery for a truly immersive experience.
