Eastern Madeira Peninsula Walk Reveals Volcanic Landscapes and Remarkable Wildlife

This full-day hiking adventure explores the dramatic easternmost tip of Madeira, where a narrow volcanic peninsula showcases some of the island’s most distinctive scenery. Formed primarily of basalt with areas of limestone, this protected landscape differs greatly from the lush forests found elsewhere on the island. Its semi-arid climate and constant northerly winds have shaped a rugged coastline that is recognized as part of the European Natura 2000 network and designated as a partial nature reserve.

As the trail winds across the peninsula, hikers encounter an impressive variety of native vegetation adapted to the dry conditions. The area is home to 138 plant species, including 31 that are found only on Madeira. The peninsula also provides an important habitat for birdlife, where species such as Berthelot's pipit, goldfinch, common canary, and common kestrel can often be observed. Offshore, protected seabirds including Cory's shearwater, storm petrel, Bulwer's petrel, and common tern soar above the Atlantic, while fortunate visitors may even spot the rare Mediterranean monk seal along the coastline.

Throughout the walk, panoramic viewpoints reveal spectacular vistas across both the northern and southern shores of Madeira. On clear days, the Desertas Islands rise from the ocean to the south, while Porto Santo Island can be seen on the northern horizon. The dramatic cliffs, volcanic rock formations, and endless ocean views create one of the island's most visually striking hiking experiences.

The route concludes at Casa Sardinha, home to the Forest Rangers responsible for protecting Madeira Natural Park. Here, walkers can enjoy a well-earned break before retracing the scenic trail back through the peninsula. Combining exceptional coastal landscapes, rare wildlife, and rich natural heritage, this eight-hour excursion offers an unforgettable journey into one of Madeira's most remarkable protected environments.
