This hike to the summit of Mount Svartfell is one of the most rewarding adventures in Borgarfjörður Eystri, offering both challenge and stunning scenery. Although Svartfell appears imposing from the fjord below, the route transforms it into an enjoyable and moderately demanding trek. The journey begins at the Breiðavík trailhead, following a broad, stable path toward Fagrihóll, aptly named “Beautiful Hill.” Along this section, hikers encounter a few steeper stretches with loose footing, but are rewarded with sweeping views of the fjord, the dramatic Dyrfjöll, Staðarfjall, winding rivers, and the expansive southern valley.
Beyond Fagrihóll, the trail fades and the adventure becomes more rugged as the ascent continues over the rocky slopes of Svartfell. The terrain shifts from gentle hills to jagged outcrops and scattered boulders as the route traverses the mountain’s eastern flank and climbs onto its northern shoulder. A short but slightly technical scramble up the north face requires the use of both hands and feet, adding a sense of excitement and exposure. Reaching the summit reveals breathtaking panoramic views over the Víknaslóðir, the surrounding peaks, and the open sea. After taking in the scenery, the descent follows the same path back to Breiðavík, bringing the hike to a memorable close.
