A remote kayaking and hiking adventure at Heinabergslón offers travelers an immersive journey into one of southeastern Iceland’s most untouched glacier environments. Located in a secluded valley shared with Heinabergsjökull, the experience combines water exploration, light trekking, and close-up encounters with glacial terrain.

The tour begins at Smyrlabjörg Hotel, where participants receive a briefing before traveling by 4x4 vehicle along rugged gravel roads toward the lake. After reaching the shoreline, kayaks are inflated and launched into calm waters filled with drifting icebergs, offering a peaceful paddle through a landscape shaped directly by glacial retreat.

On the water, guests explore Heinabergslón, a lake formed by meltwater from Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap. The surrounding environment features freshly exposed rocky terrain, moss-covered plains, and open valleys where wildlife such as reindeer may occasionally be seen grazing.
