This tour takes you kayaking and hiking at Heinabergslón, an iceberg-filled lake sharing a valley with the Heinabergsjökull glacier. After meeting at Smyrlabjörg Hotel for a short briefing, we drive through rugged landscapes in a 4x4 vehicle along gravel roads before walking to the lake’s edge. Inflating our kayaks, we paddle at a relaxed pace among majestic icebergs, exploring the serene waters while taking in the breathtaking surroundings. This remote area is untouched by roads, leaving nature to flourish freely, from rocky terrain recently uncovered by melting ice to mossy pastures where reindeer graze.

After kayaking across the lake, we land at the southern end near the base of Hafrafell mountain. Switching from drysuits to hiking boots, we ascend a scenic trail to a viewpoint overlooking an outlet glacier descending from the Vatnajökull ice cap. Along the way, we witness the dramatic transition from barren glacial land to vibrant ecosystems forming over the last decades. The hike is gentle, allowing time to appreciate the evolving landscape and spectacular views. After reaching the summit and enjoying the panorama, we return to the boats and paddle back across the lake, completing a unique adventure that combines the thrill of kayaking with the serenity of a hidden, pristine wilderness.
