Stunning! We debated for a long time whether to make the trek out here or not, given we aren’t big hikers. We’re so glad we did! The mountains are incredible! The whole vibe around the camp with hikers coming and going is really cool. We walked up the start of the main trail just to the little lookout point that you can see from the parking lot, and the views were magnificent. And the thermal river was our favorite hot spring in all of Iceland! Highly highly recommend! We took the north/easiest road and it wasn’t terrible, just slow and bumpy.
Stayed in October with high winds and -15 nights, but the camping was still great! It was only us and a few other groups. The hiking and biking is great, I think the only complaint I could have is the charge for hot water from the showers. I get you have to make money to maintain the place somehow but the water is supplied directly from the hot springs, to then charge per 5 minutes is kinda steep. That being said I would definitely come back regardless of that.
Visiting here was absolutely worth it! We went there in August 2024. Getting there, however, was a bit of adventure. We took Route 208 on the way in and returned via Route F225. Both routes had their challenges, but the scenery made it all worthwhile. Route 208: The last around 25 km were off-road, taking us around 50 minutes to get out due to numerous big potholes. After rain, the road becomes even rougher and quite bumpy, but the good news—no river crossings! Along the way, we stopped at a stunning viewpoint, Hnausapollur, which was very beautiful! Route F225: On the way back, we covered about 100 km of off-road driving, which took around 110 minutes. This route had fewer and smaller potholes and was less bumpy overall, but it did require two river crossings.(at the same place) Fortunately, our Suzuki VITARA handled it with ease. We didn’t cross the river at Landmannalaugar, instead parking in front of it, where there are around 50 parking spots available. Both routes are challenging, but the breathtaking views make the journey more than worth it!
