The day begins beside the peaceful tidal waters of the beautiful Ria de Alvor lagoon, where wide mudflats attract a lively gathering of coastal birds. As the morning light spreads across the marsh and water, flocks of waders search the soft mud for food while the calm lagoon reflects the surrounding landscape. Oystercatchers, Whimbrels, Grey and Ringed Plovers, Dunlins, Redshanks, Bar tailed Godwits and Turnstones are often seen feeding along the edges. The path continues along narrow dykes beside the lagoon and marsh, offering clear views of waterbirds resting or moving through the shallows. Coots glide across the lagoon and elegant Flamingos or Spoonbills sometimes appear in the distance. On the nearby marsh, bird activity changes with the water level and Black winged Stilts may gather in graceful numbers. The walk continues through a quiet farmland landscape dotted with traditional Carob, Fig and Almond trees, a perfect habitat for Woodchat Shrikes and Red legged Partridges before reaching the peaceful Roman ruins of Roman Ruins of Abicada overlooking another small marsh.
During the afternoon the exploration continues through the sandy dunes of Alvor Dunes along a wooden boardwalk surrounded by coastal vegetation. Small passerine birds move through the shrubs including Crested Lark, Zitting Cisticola, Sardinian Warbler, Goldfinch and Greenfinch. When the tide retreats, wide mudflats appear across the estuary revealing more feeding waders such as Sanderlings, Grey Plovers, Dunlins and Whimbrels. In spring the dunes become nesting grounds for species like Short toed Larks, Kentish Plovers and Little Terns, and patient observation may reveal families or courtship displays. The walk gently returns along the open beach where the sea breeze and ocean views create a relaxing end to the journey. There is time to enjoy the shoreline, possibly pause for a refreshing swim, and then stroll beside the marsh once more searching for additional waders or wintering Bluethroats. The day finishes peacefully near the sea with a refreshing drink or a cool ice cream while reflecting on a memorable birdwatching experience.
