Explore the peaceful hills surrounding Monchique, where the landscape of the Algarve reveals a quieter natural side far from the busy coastline. Although parts of the hills are now planted with eucalyptus, beautiful patches of cork oak woodland still remain and provide important habitat for local wildlife. The morning begins at Foia, the highest point in the Algarve, where clear weather offers sweeping views across mountains and coastline. This elevated area is an excellent place to observe several characteristic species including the black redstart, blue rock thrush and rock bunting. Scrubby slopes nearby often shelter small songbirds such as whitethroat, sardinian warbler, dartford warbler and melodious warbler. As the exploration continues into slightly lower woodland areas, birdlife becomes even richer with sightings that may include green woodpecker, great spotted woodpecker, short toed treecreeper and jay. Birds of prey are also regularly seen gliding above the hills, with kestrel and buzzard being the most common while sparrowhawk and impressive eagles occasionally appear.
Later the journey continues to the peaceful spa village of Caldas de Monchique, nestled among tall shady trees and natural springs. Here the atmosphere becomes calm and relaxing as the sound of flowing water fills the air. Lunch is enjoyed outdoors beneath the forest canopy while watching small woodland birds such as nuthatch, great tit and blue tit moving through the branches. Grey wagtails are often seen along the streams that pass through the village. During the afternoon a gentle walk through the gardens and surrounding woodland reveals even more birdlife. Firecrest, nightingale, blackcap and robin are frequently spotted among the foliage, creating a delightful soundtrack to the afternoon. The day ends in a relaxed way with a refreshing drink while reflecting on the rich wildlife, peaceful scenery and memorable birdwatching moments experienced in the beautiful hills of Monchique.
