Start the day beside a peaceful tidal lagoon where wide mudflats attract many fascinating wading birds. This rich coastal habitat is a wonderful place for birdwatching as species such as oystercatchers whimbrels ringed plovers grey plovers dunlins redshanks bar tailed godwits and turnstones search the soft mud for food. The walking path follows the dykes that run gently beside the lagoon and nearby marsh offering wide open views across the landscape. Coots are commonly seen on the lagoon and on many days elegant flamingos and graceful spoonbills can also be spotted feeding quietly in the shallow water. The marsh changes with the water level and can hold varying numbers of birds throughout the season. Black winged stilts are often present in good numbers and their striking appearance makes them easy to recognise. This peaceful walk along the dyke allows visitors to enjoy the calm atmosphere while observing wildlife in a natural setting.
After leaving the lagoon path the walk continues through a charming farmland area with traditional trees such as carob fig and almond that are typical of the region. This rural landscape provides a different habitat where species like woodchat shrikes and red legged partridges are often seen. The trail eventually reaches the ancient Roman ruins of Abicada which today are mostly covered by natural vegetation. Although the ruins themselves are modest the location offers beautiful views across a small marsh nearby. Here visitors may see marsh harrier spoonbills and black winged stilts gliding over the wetlands. During spring additional birds such as little ringed plover ruff purple heron and avocet may appear adding even more variety to the experience. After enjoying the scenery and birdlife the walk returns calmly along the same path back to the starting point.
