Magnificent Moon (MM) program

Set high above the Sonoran Desert, Kitt Peak National Observatory offers an inspiring evening devoted to the beauty of the Moon and the brilliance of the night sky. Home to a remarkable collection of optical and radio telescopes, this renowned research facility provides an unforgettable introduction to astronomy. The experience begins at the Visitor Center, where engaging exhibits share the story of the observatory and its scientific achievements. After a light meal, guests enjoy a guided orientation to the night sky, learning how to recognize prominent stars and constellations before stepping outdoors for telescope viewing. Participants observe the Moon in stunning detail and, when visible, planets and select deep space objects. A visit inside one of the observatory domes offers a rare chance to see the heavens through a professional research instrument.

Designed for a more personal and immersive atmosphere, the program maintains a small guest to staff ratio, allowing generous time at the telescopes and binocular stations. Evenings on the summit can feel much colder than surrounding areas, so warm layered clothing and sturdy closed toe shoes are essential. As an active scientific site, the observatory follows strict lighting controls to protect ongoing research, and guests depart together in a guided vehicle convoy for safety. The program involves walking and climbing stairs and is best suited for adults and older children. In case of unfavorable weather, an alternate astronomy experience may be offered.
