Discover one of the earliest telescopes on Kitt Peak during a guided daytime tour at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Tucson Arizona. This sixty minute docent led experience visits the historic two point one meter Telescope, an important instrument in modern astronomy. Astronomer Vera Rubin used this telescope for landmark observations that helped confirm the existence of dark matter. The mountain setting also offers cooler temperatures during summer and wide desert views from nearly seven thousand feet above sea level.
The two point one meter Telescope remains operational today and is used for imaging and spectroscopy. It is paired with the Coude Tower, allowing independent spectroscopic work and making it a dual observing facility. The program involves extensive walking, including uphill paths and nearly two flights of stairs. Most facilities are not wheelchair accessible. Guests should check in at the Visitor Center at least fifteen minutes before the tour. Advance reservations are recommended. Discounts are available for seniors, students, active duty military, and groups. Members of the Tohono Oodham Nation and ASTC Members receive free admission with valid identification. International guests should carry passports due to a border checkpoint along the route. Prices displayed do not include fees.
