If you're a regular civilian & not at all into hiking, this might not be the best for you; but if you still decide to go, know that your experience might range from reconnection with the divine to ego death. Is the view worth it? From what I could see through the fog, somewhat. Gruelling experience, made sombre and reflective by the audio tour playing in my ears. I felt like a soldier marching on till the bitter end.
We took the 434 bus (running every 10 minutes) from the National Palace of Sintra/Sintra Vila, which is the second stop from Sintra Station. The Moorish Castle is the very next stop, and I would not recommend walking up unless you’re very fit or specifically looking for a challenging hike. From the entrance to the very top, our visit took about 1 hour. We didn’t stop much for photos or videos because it was very foggy, but even then, I felt exhausted afterwards (I’m not sporty at all). If you’re visiting in winter, make sure to dress warmly — scarf, hat, and layers are essential. It was extremely windy during our visit, and I ended up catching a cold. There are signs indicating that the walk from the Moorish Castle to the Park and Palace of Pena is 550m, but it’s uphill and not an easy climb. I definitely recommend taking the 434 bus instead. The next stop on the route is the Park and Palace of Pena. Side note for transportation: We took the CP train from Lisbon to Sintra, which took about 40 minutes. I recommend getting the Train + Bus combo ticket (€14). You’ll need a Navegante Occasional Card (€0.50), so the total is €14.50. Make sure you take the receipt and keep it safe — the bus drivers check the receipt, not the card, every time you board. Also, the leaflet provided by the bus staff was outdated during our visit, as the route has recently changed. Our trip was amazing! We ended up being the only ones for our tour so it was like our own personal guide. Our guide Rodrigo was great. Very friendly, knowledgeable, friendly and gave us great tips on places to eat and shop. We’d definitely do this again when we come back to Portugal.
