The Texas License to Carry (LTC) course is a comprehensive five-hour program designed to meet all state-mandated requirements for obtaining a Texas-issued LTC permit. This course combines thorough classroom instruction, a written examination, and a hands-on shooting proficiency test to ensure participants are fully prepared for the responsibilities of carrying a firearm. The classroom portion covers essential topics including Texas firearm laws, the legal use of force, rules for carrying on your person, and the responsibilities that come with holding a License to Carry. Students will engage with the material through detailed explanations and guided discussions, culminating in a written test that assesses their understanding of these critical legal concepts. The program is structured to ensure that every participant leaves with a solid foundation of knowledge, equipping them to carry safely and responsibly in compliance with Texas law.
Following the classroom instruction, students complete a shooting proficiency test, typically lasting around one hour. This test evaluates participants’ ability to handle a handgun safely and accurately under controlled conditions. The standard qualification requires firing 50 rounds at varying distances: 20 rounds at 3 yards, 20 rounds at 7 yards, and 10 rounds at 15 yards. It is important to note that this course is not intended for beginners; prior handgun experience is required, as instructors are not permitted to provide coaching during the proficiency portion of the class. Students must bring a cased and unloaded handgun, 50 rounds of ammunition, closed-toe shoes, appropriate clothing, and a pen and paper for note-taking. Drinks are allowed if desired, with vending machines available on site. By completing this course, participants gain both the legal knowledge and practical skills necessary to meet Texas state requirements, leaving confident and prepared to obtain and responsibly use their License to Carry permit.
