The License to Carry (LTC) course is a comprehensive, state-mandated program designed to provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and legal understanding necessary to obtain a Texas-issued License to Carry permit. The full course typically lasts around five hours, combining classroom instruction with practical shooting evaluation to ensure participants are fully prepared for both the written and shooting proficiency components. The classroom portion, which takes approximately four to six hours, covers critical topics including the laws surrounding the possession and carry of firearms, the legal use of force, responsibilities of a licensed carrier, and other essential legal considerations. Students will also complete a written test to demonstrate their understanding of these laws, ensuring that each participant has the knowledge required to safely and responsibly exercise their right to carry a firearm.
In addition to the classroom component, the course includes a hands-on shooting proficiency test, which usually takes one to two hours. Participants will be required to demonstrate accurate and safe shooting skills by firing 50 rounds at specified distances: 20 rounds at 3 yards, 20 rounds at 7 yards, and 10 rounds at 15 yards. This test evaluates the participant’s ability to handle a handgun safely and effectively under standard conditions. It is important to note that the LTC class and shooting qualification is not intended as a beginner handgun course; prior shooting experience is required, as instructors are not permitted to provide training or guidance during the proficiency test. Students are expected to bring their own cased and unloaded firearm, ammunition, and appropriate attire to ensure safety and compliance with course requirements. With a combination of legal education and practical skill assessment, this LTC course equips responsible firearm owners with the confidence, knowledge, and credentials needed to carry a handgun in the State of Texas.
