This gentle countryside walk follows the peaceful Levada da Referta in the rural area of Porto da Cruz on the northern side of Madeira. The path is flat and easy, making it perfect for visitors who want a comfortable outdoor experience without steep climbs. The journey begins in the quiet farming area of Referta and continues toward the small village of Castelejo, passing through landscapes shaped by traditional Madeiran agriculture. Along the way you will see vegetable fields, fruit trees, and stretches of sugar cane that reflect the long history and self sustaining traditions of the local community. Sugar cane remains an important crop in the region and is used to produce the well known local brandy that forms the base of the iconic Poncha drink.
As the levada guides you farther through the valley, you will also come across small vineyards that contribute to the production of the popular American wine of the region. The scenery opens into unforgettable views of the northern coastline, revealing the blue waters of the sea and the village of Porto da Cruz framed by the striking rocky formation known as Penha da Aguia. This impressive natural landmark rises above the landscape and creates a dramatic backdrop that adds to the beauty of the entire walk. The peaceful environment combined with the rich rural culture makes this levada an ideal choice for travelers who want to enjoy nature while discovering the traditions of Madeira.
