Levada do Rei

This serene walk begins at the São Jorge Water Treatment Plant and follows the Levada dos Reis toward the pristine natural sanctuary of Ribeiro Bonito. The first stretch of the trail passes through an exotic forest, where introduced species mingle with native vegetation, creating a rich tapestry of colour and texture. As the path gently unfolds, sweeping views over the rural landscapes of São Jorge and Santana appear, showcasing traditional terraces and farmland. Along the way, walkers can spot wild herbs and medicinal plants that have been used for generations as natural remedies, adding cultural depth to the natural scenery.

As the route progresses, the environment transforms into one of Madeira’s most untouched sections of Laurissilva Forest. Here, water flows abundantly through streams and small waterfalls, one of which can be crossed in front of or behind for a refreshing and memorable moment. The path becomes enveloped in dense vegetation, including ancient laurel trees, Madeira mahogany and other endemic species that form a living reminder of the island’s early days. The soft sounds of the forest accompany the journey, from the flowing water to the calls of birds such as the chaffinch and the lively firecrest. Upon reaching Ribeiro Bonito, the purity of the landscape offers a sense of stepping back in time, making this walk a peaceful and immersive escape into Madeira’s natural heritage.
