Vereda do Larano is a stunning coastal hike on the eastern side of Madeira, following a cliff-side trail that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The trail begins near Machico, where hikers can admire panoramic vistas of the town and the coastline stretching toward the north. Carved directly into the side of the mountain, the path provides dramatic perspectives over the ocean, making each step a visual delight. Its narrow and rugged sections reveal the island’s natural beauty and the skill involved in carving trails along steep cliffs.

Historically, this trail served as the shortest route between Machico and Porto da Cruz, used by locals to transport goods and travel efficiently along the coast. Walking the path today allows visitors to experience a mix of adventure and history, with the ever-present ocean on one side and towering cliffs on the other. The combination of dramatic scenery, historical significance, and the sense of walking along a centuries-old route makes Vereda do Larano a must-visit for hikers seeking both beauty and a touch of Madeira’s past.

Very low-key and beautiful trail with beautiful views of the water and the jungle. Visit this trail before it becomes too famous by social media and gets busy. It was quiet, peaceful, beautiful scenery. Mostly flat with a couple of down hills. Total hike including return and raking photos is between 3-4 hours. The hike can extend to 35 kms. 3-4 hours is to risco. You can continue the hike further depending on your plans. See the mal below

Absolutely stunning cliff walk. We started from the trail head just outside Porto da Cruz, there's no car park but plenty of space to pull over on the side of the road. It's quiet compared to the other more popular hikes in Madeira, but definitely not any less beautiful! We started on a rough track through woods with some waterfalls which later transitioned to the cliff side walk. Once we finished the cliff walk and re-entered wooded area we decided to turnaround and return to Porto da Cruz - the trail mainly flat apart from one or two sets of steps to cross streams at the start. There are no amenities on this hike so come prepared!

One of the most breathtaking coastal hikes in Madeira! 🌊🌿 Vereda do Larano connects Porto da Cruz with Machico and follows an old coastal path high above the cliffs. The trail offers nonstop views of the Atlantic, dramatic cliffs plunging into the sea, and green valleys stretching inland. On clear days, the panorama is jaw-dropping, but even in mist or passing clouds it has a wild, adventurous atmosphere. The path itself is relatively narrow at times, with some exposed sections, but it is well-marked and safe if you take care. You’ll walk through eucalyptus groves, farmlands, and forested areas before reaching stretches where you feel suspended between mountain and ocean. The contrasts — lush green on one side and deep blue sea on the other — make this hike unforgettable. It’s a point-to-point trail, so many people arrange transport from one side or combine it with nearby routes. Good hiking shoes are essential, and a moderate level of fitness is needed due to the length and some ups and downs. Bring water and snacks — this is a place where you’ll want to pause often, not only to rest but also to take in the incredible scenery.

Beautiful hike. Confusing in where it starts/ends. We parked just outside of Porto da Cruz where its just a dead end at someone's backyard. Beware the "NO PARKING" signs - I heard that some people get their car tires slashed by parking there. People just park along the side of this road and then walk up the dead end area, for about 20 minutes its just dirt road. Then you have the start of the trail. Its forest with some small waterfalls, exposed area, then forest again, then you reach boca do risa. We considered going to Machico from here and continuing on the Canical hike as others have done but we did about 30 minutes of it and it is a TOUGH hike up and through the mountains. We were not prepared and it looked like rain. Turned around and headed back to the car. It was about 10km, 28k steps, and took about 3 hours in total if we had turned around at the Boca do riso viewpoint. Note that that some people are talking about a LONGER hike, and some are talking about the in and out hike from Varada Larano to Boca do riso. No bathrooms, bring plastic bag, tissue, hand santizer. Don't leave garbage on the ground. Hiking poles helpful if you have a mild fear of heights

Absolutely beautiful hike, not too challenging in terms of elevation. We hiked it from Machico to Porta da Cruz and was about 12.5km one way. We got the bus back from Porta da Cruz bus stop to Machico which was only 2 euro and the bus ride itself was very scenic. The hike has an array of scenery, a Levada walk on the Machico side passing beside quaint house and farms, then turning into forest before reaching the glorious cliffs themselves and then the scenic descent into Porta da Cruz. It also was one of the quietest hikes we did on the island (didn’t run into that many people) truly underrated, it stands out as one of our favourites!
