Madeira Mountain Trails Combine High-Altitude Views with Scenic Valley Hike

A self-guided hiking experience in Madeira is offering outdoor enthusiasts a chance to explore some of the island’s most dramatic landscapes through two connected trail routes. The adventure begins at Pico do Arieiro, one of the island’s highest accessible peaks, where the PR1 “Stairway to Heaven” trail provides sweeping panoramic views and a challenging yet rewarding mountain path.

Hikers can move at their own pace along ridgelines overlooking São Roque do Faial, the Fajã da Nogueira valley, and surrounding high-altitude terrain. The route also offers opportunities to observe native birdlife, including species such as the buzzard and manx shearwater, making the journey as rich in wildlife as it is in scenery.

After completing the high-altitude section, the route continues onto the PR3 Vereda do Burro trail, which reveals a contrasting perspective of Madeira’s interior. From here, expansive views open over the Ribeira do Cidrão valley, Curral das Freiras, and the vast Paul da Serra plateau, showcasing the island’s varied geological landscape.

Along the way, hikers pass the historic Poço da Neve, a snow reservoir dating back to 1813, before concluding at the Ecological Park. The experience ends on a relaxed note at a donkey farm and the nearby Restaurante Barracão, where visitors can unwind with a warm drink after a full day of mountain exploration.
