Two Days in the Wild: Trekking Piatra Craiului’s Alpine Heart

Departing from Brașov, this guided two-day expedition leads travelers deep into the dramatic landscapes of Piatra Craiului National Park, one of Romania’s most striking mountain regions. With a small group capped at eight participants and a licensed English-speaking mountain guide, the journey begins with a scenic drive into the park, setting the stage for an immersive alpine experience shaped by limestone ridges, forested valleys, and traditional mountain life.

The first day unfolds as a sustained trek of five to eight hours through some of the park’s most scenic terrain. The route passes through the picturesque villages of Măgura and Peștera, where time seems to slow among wooden houses and rolling pastures. In the summer months, travelers may pause at an authentic sheep farm for a traditional countryside lunch, offering a direct taste of local pastoral culture. By evening, the group settles into a guesthouse in Peștera, where warm hospitality and hearty regional cuisine provide rest after a full day on the trail.

On the second day, weather permitting, the journey reaches its most demanding and rewarding stage: an ascent toward Vârful La Om, the highest peak in the park at 2,238 meters. The climb opens onto sweeping ridgelines and vast panoramic views across the Carpathians, revealing one of Romania’s most spectacular alpine perspectives. The descent offers a contrasting encounter with the dramatic Zărnești Gorges, a limestone canyon carved by natural forces over millennia.

The expedition concludes with a return to Brașov, completing a journey that blends physical challenge, cultural encounters, and raw natural beauty.
