Skeleton Gorge Hike to Table Mountain Summit

This challenging hike begins at the renowned Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden and ascends through the iconic Skeleton Gorge, one of the most scenic but demanding routes up Table Mountain. The trail immediately enters dense forest before climbing steadily up a steep gorge, where hikers encounter rocky terrain, boulder-strewn paths, and a series of wooden ladders that require careful footing, especially for those with a fear of heights. Along the way, the environment shifts dramatically depending on conditions—ranging from cool, shaded forest after rain to hot and strenuous climbs during the summer months.

Near the upper section of the gorge, the route opens up to the historic Table Mountain dams, where a short detour reveals a surprising “beach” above the city. From there, the hike continues to Maclear’s Beacon, the highest point on Table Mountain, before traversing across the expansive tabletop summit toward the upper cable station.
