Lion's Head Mountain is truly one of the most spectacular places I visited in Cape Town, and easily one of the top experiences I had while in South Africa. From the very start, the hike lets you know what you're in for…it immediately begins on an incline and is definitely challenging, but in the most rewarding way. The trail includes gravel paths and sections where you use ladders to climb up to the next part of the hike, which adds a fun, adventurous element and makes the journey feel exciting rather than repetitive. Reaching the top is absolutely worth every step. The views are nothing short of breathtaking, with panoramic sights of Cape Town, the ocean, and the surrounding mountains. Watching the sunset from the summit was amazing-the sky filled with beautiful purple, red & yellow colors and the city below slowly lighting up created a truly magical moment. I highly recommend this hike to anyone visiting Cape Town. It's challenging, exhilarating, and incredibly rewarding, and I would personally love to hike Lion's Head again. Absolutely beautiful! Did this hike with my brother, this is probably the 6th time I've done this hike and it never disappoints! (Take torches if you are doing a sunset hike, it gets dark quick! And its pretty sketchy coming down in the dark.) But the view is totally worth the hike!
The most amazing hike and experience I had in 2025. Started early to catch sunrise which is highly recommended, views and lights are amazing!! Did the hike in december and felt like the hike was a bit easier than described by many. I’m afraid of heights but had no problems with the ladders and pathways leading to the top (took the faster/harder route). Also didn’t really need a sweater since on the way up you get warm from walking uphill and on the way down the sun is up. Hike took about 50min-1hr each way, down slightly slower due to more traffic in both directions and some queues at the ladders. For sure a MUST DO if you’re in Cape Town!
