The newly refurbished Florence Hawley Ellis Museum of Anthropology offers visitors a fascinating journey into the past through the story of the Gallina people, a pre Puebloan culture that once lived in the region. Their history reflects a life shaped by challenging environmental conditions and long periods of drought, earning them the description of a culture that lived from drought to drought. Alongside these ancient stories, the museum also presents a vibrant exhibit featuring works by contemporary artists from the eight northern pueblos who served as artists in residence at Ghost Ranch during the summer season of two thousand twenty four, bringing together tradition and modern creative expression.
In the Ruth Hall Museum of Paleontology, visitors can explore remarkable discoveries from Ghost Ranch, including famous Triassic dinosaur finds. One of the most extraordinary highlights is the discovery of more than a thousand intact Coelophysis skeletons excavated from a quarry near Kitchen Mesa, offering rare insight into prehistoric life. The museum also displays genuine fossils carefully removed from the massive quarry block, allowing visitors to witness preserved remains that reveal the ancient natural history of the region. Completing the experience is the Georgia O Keeffe Landscape Tour, a narrated journey through the striking red hills and colorful cliffs of Ghost Ranch. The tour follows scenic routes while showcasing reproductions of her iconic landscape paintings placed near the locations that inspired them, along with views of her desert home exterior, creating a deep connection between art and landscape.
