The Rio Chama two-day rafting trip offers an unforgettable adventure through some of the most beautiful and varied landscapes of northern New Mexico. Beginning at Bode’s General Store in Abiquiu, participants are transported to the starting point in Chama, where the river awaits with its clear alpine waters and lively class II rapids. The first day combines the excitement of navigating gentle rapids with the tranquility of a pristine canyon wilderness. Rafters will float past towering cliffs and dense evergreen forests, with opportunities for trout fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing. The day concludes at a scenic riverside campsite, where guests can relax under ponderosa pines and Douglas firs, enjoy a delicious fireside dinner, and soak in the quiet beauty of the Southwest.
On the second day, the adventure continues with more class II rapids as the river winds through the colorful Chama Canyon. After a hearty breakfast, guests can opt for a scenic hike to nearby viewpoints for panoramic vistas of the canyon. The trip passes the serene Christ in the Desert Monastery before arriving at the takeout at Chavez Canyon in the mid-afternoon. Throughout the journey, participants experience both the thrill of whitewater and the calm of remote wilderness, making this trip ideal for families, first-time rafters, and outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. This adventure combines active fun with relaxation and immersive scenery, offering a true taste of the natural and cultural richness of New Mexico.
