This Rio Chama day trip is a perfect introduction to northern New Mexico’s stunning river scenery. Spanning about 8 miles, this family friendly float begins near the Benedictine monastery and winds through colorful cliffs and serene high-desert landscapes before ending just above Abiquiu Reservoir. Along the way, participants can enjoy splashy class II rapids, quiet stretches of scenic wilderness, and opportunities to spot local wildlife. The combination of gentle rapids, striking geology, and open river vistas makes this trip ideal for both first-time rafters and experienced paddlers looking for a relaxing but fun day on the water.
Guests meet at Bode’s General Store in Abiquiu at 9:00 AM and are shuttled to the launch point near Christ in the Desert Monastery. After a safety briefing, the adventure begins with paddle boats, oar boats, inflatable kayaks, or stand-up paddleboards. A riverside lunch is included to refresh before completing the float at Big Eddy river access point. This trip requires a minimum group of four or a $600 minimum due to the long 200-mile round trip for guides, but smaller groups may be combined with others to meet requirements. The day concludes with a scenic drive back to the starting point, leaving participants with memories of southwestern beauty, fun on the rapids, and a sense of connection with the region’s remarkable landscapes.
