The Greenbrier Express offers a scenic journey through one of West Virginia’s most breathtaking landscapes, departing from the historic town of Cass and following the pristine waters of the Greenbrier River to the mountain village of Durbin. Passengers are treated to sweeping views of forested mountains, secluded wilderness, and the meandering river, where wildlife sightings of deer, river otters, black bears, and a variety of eagles, hawks, and aquatic birds are common. Upon arrival in Durbin, each guest enjoys a classic cold cut lunch served at a pre-assigned location, whether in the train car, the depot, or one of the charming restaurants along Main Street. A guide is available to ensure smooth access to each venue, while additional menu items are available for purchase. The combination of rich natural beauty and thoughtful amenities creates a journey that is as relaxing as it is memorable.
This historic rail route traces its origins back to the early twentieth century when the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway constructed it to support timber development in the region. After decades of use and eventual decline, portions of the line were abandoned, with major damage occurring during a catastrophic flood. Thanks to a collaborative effort between the West Virginia State Rail Authority and the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad, the track has been reconstructed and preserved for modern visitors. Today’s journey follows the northernmost stretch of the original line, offering passengers a unique opportunity to experience a historic steam train in operation while enjoying new and scenic river views along a reimagined route. With unspoiled vistas, the thrill of steam power, and a passage through iconic forested landscapes, the Greenbrier Express provides an immersive and unforgettable experience for rail enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
