The Camp Car is a true piece of West Virginia history, representing the last survivor of the Cass-built camp cars that once roamed the forests of Cheat Mountain. Originally part of the Mower Lumber Company fleet, it moved alongside high-line skidders across the vast woodland from the mid twentieth century. Constructed almost entirely from wood, with the exception of the truss rods and trucks, it retains its historic charm while offering a unique lodging experience. Visitors will travel from Cass aboard a classic steam locomotive, arriving at the Camp Car in a caboose that is carefully aligned with the car for easy access via a connecting platform. The Camp Car itself features sleeping arrangements for four guests, with a futon and a table that converts into a double bed, while the attached caboose offers two additional bunks, comfortably accommodating a total of six people for overnight stays.
Inside, the Camp Car blends historic charm with modern conveniences. Guests will find a full range of amenities including a refrigerator, stove, heating, linens, towels, utensils, a full-size shower, and a restroom, ensuring a comfortable and self-contained experience in the heart of the forest. A personal load of firewood is provided to enjoy a campfire beneath the stars, enhancing the rustic appeal. Nestled within the National Radio Quiet Zone, the location offers a rare opportunity to disconnect from modern technology, as no cell service is available, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the serenity of the natural surroundings. Between the historic rail experience, the cozy accommodations, and the breathtaking forest setting, the Camp Car offers an unforgettable escape that combines heritage, adventure, and tranquility in one unique experience.
