Join a guided Spring Wildflower Walk at Raccoon Creek State Park and explore the beauty of over 700 plant species in the Wildflower Preserve. Local ecologist Henry Schumacher will lead participants on a slow-paced 2-3 mile walk, sharing tips for identifying and finding wildflowers in different habitats. This outing offers a unique opportunity to learn about native plants, enjoy fresh air, and take in the natural scenery along mostly flat floodplain trails. The walk is ideal for older children accompanied by adults and anyone interested in nature, photography, or outdoor learning. Participants will meet at the parking lot next to the Interpretive Center for a brief introduction before heading onto the trails.
The trail terrain consists of dirt paths and a short slightly steep hill, and trails may be muddy in some areas. The walk lasts approximately two and a half hours and is considered moderately difficult. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable closed-toed shoes, such as hiking or winter boots, and dress appropriately for the weather, including gloves, hats, and scarves if needed. A water bottle is also recommended. The outing provides a cozy, educational experience that emphasizes observation, mindfulness, and an appreciation for the seasonal wildflowers in a peaceful natural setting.
