Join a guided Lewis and Clark hike at Emerald View Park and explore Pittsburgh’s scenic trails while learning about an important chapter of American history. This hike highlights the 2003 historical reenactment of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the 2019 designation of Pittsburgh as the official trailhead of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. Participants will meet at the West End Library and follow the trail system on Mt. Washington, enjoying diverse terrain, city views, and a mix of hills and stairs. Reenactor John McNulty will share insights from his involvement in the bicentennial expedition and help participants connect with the region’s historical significance. This moderate-level hike combines physical activity with educational storytelling for an engaging outdoor experience.
The hike covers approximately three to four miles and lasts about five hours. Moderate breaks are built in to discuss history and enjoy the surroundings. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable closed-toed shoes and bring water to stay hydrated. The trails offer both scenic beauty and moderate challenge, making the hike suitable for most adults and older children. This outing provides an opportunity to learn history on foot, engage with local culture, and experience one of Pittsburgh’s most picturesque park systems. Participants are encouraged to reach out to organizers if cost is a concern to ensure accessibility for everyone.
