The Two-Day Beginner Kayak Course is designed to introduce new paddlers to the sport of whitewater kayaking while building a strong foundation for future success. The course emphasizes fun and engagement from the start, teaching proper stroke techniques and responsible whitewater practices. Participants begin in a calm pond, learning to safely exit the kayak when upside down and practicing basic strokes such as forward strokes, sweep strokes, draws, and braces. Once comfortable, students progress to moving water, where river maneuvers like eddy turns, peel outs, and ferries are introduced under the guidance of experienced instructors. This structured approach ensures that beginners gain confidence, develop essential skills, and enjoy a safe and engaging paddling experience.
On the second day, students continue refining river maneuvers and complete a several-mile section of river featuring Class One and Two rapids. This practical application allows participants to see measurable progress, experience real river conditions, and build confidence in their abilities. The course is ideal for anyone aged fourteen and older who wants to try whitewater kayaking, learn foundational river skills, and develop the competence to paddle independently in the future. Topics covered include basic boat orientation, maneuvering strokes, safe exits, leaning techniques, whitewater safety, and running beginner-level river sections. By the end of the clinic, students leave with hands-on experience, improved skills, and a solid foundation for further whitewater exploration.
