I came here cuz they successfully won the worst airport that we’ve been to. We’ve been to many countries and places and none inspired me to write a review until now. I agree with other reviews and nominating this to be the worst airport even though this is technically the US. Arrival was fine and seemed festive but boy, the departure was a mess! First United didn’t have a separate line marked for priority check in so we’re in this long line with everyone outside the air conditioning. When you finally passed that line, you go thru another line for immigration check which was weird cuz we thought it was part of the US. We have global entry but it still seemed way too slow with one officer just chitchatting away with a passenger when there’s a line of people waiting. There were also two lines going to the same guy?? I mean this is like going through immigration regularly, wait in line to see an officer, but maybe regular line is even worse?? Then after that line, you go thru another line with all your luggage to the agricultural check, then another line for the regular TSA (pre)check, handing in a TSA check card they give you from the last check because who can keep up with these checks?! For the TSA checks, my husband’s bag went into the x ray machine right after mine, but it somehow didn’t come out for like what it felt like 10 mins after he walked through the scanner. When he asked the officer, they didn’t seem to care (“I only look at the scanner”) and had no idea where his bag was. He was not only frustrated but very concerned what they could’ve done to his bag. I told him it’s much better chance that they were incompetent than malicious. When he complained to the TSA supervisor, she more less listened to her girls who lied that they didn’t say what they did and we could complain online to TSA. At least we had a/c the whole time I guessed! They definitely weren’t kidding about planning 3 hours for departure and we were told this wasn’t even a busy day. I concurred with other reviews that it’s very safe to say, we won’t return to St. Thomas besides everything on the island was expensive and subpar and besides the nice beaches which you can just find by going to other islands. We wouldn’t mind trying a cruise though since that seems to be the way to go. Much cheaper and less hassle like this.
Departure Hall does not have AC, in the high 80’s inside, no water fountains, $5 is the least expensive drink for sale. Arrival was fine, not sure why departure is so bad, like small town Mexico 25 years ago, “No Bueno!”
It was a crowded airport despite being on a slow season. Not many choices for resting or eating. Arrive early like I did or you might lose your flight. Cleanliness was ok. Overall 2nd worst airport I had visited. You will walk to the airplane from the gate in the Tarmac rain or shine. The only reason it surprises me is because I was still on American soil, as USVI residents are US citizens. Inmigration asked questions like you were going on an interational flight.
