Visiting Doi Suthep at night was an incredible experience. I’d never been up there in the evening before, and the temple was beautifully lit—so peaceful and serene. We were also able to witness the monks’ evening chanting, which was amazing to experience and even participate in. It truly added to the spiritual atmosphere. We took a Grab rod daeng up to the top for about 300 baht, but be prepared—coming back down was more expensive. The temple steps are also a solid climb and definitely not wheelchair or handicap accessible. Once you’re up there, though, there are numerous signs throughout the grounds explaining the temple’s history and the meaning behind many of the statues and structures, which really helps you appreciate the monastery even more. A memorable and meaningful visit—highly recommended, especially at night.

Long before it dazzled with gold, the journey began in silence at Wat Pha Lat, a hidden forest temple once used by monks and kings as a place of rest and purification. Here, waterfalls murmur past moss-covered ruins, and the mountain still feels untouched. According to Lanna chronicles, a sacred hair relic of the Buddha once arrived in Chiang Mai and miraculously divided into two parts. One half was enshrined at Wat Suan Dok in the city. The second was placed upon the back of a white royal elephant, released into the forest to choose its final resting place. The elephant climbed Doi Suthep, trumpeted three times near the summit, and collapsed—marking the spot where Wat Phra That Doi Suthep stands today. Its golden chedi, built in classic Lanna style, mirrors the cosmic form of Mount Meru itself. Reached by a staircase guarded by seven-headed Nāga serpents, the summit opens to sweeping views across Chiang Mai’s ancient walled city and modern sprawl beyond. Doi Suthep is not merely a temple. It is a living relic axis between mountain and city, silence and gold, legend and daily faith—and the true spiritual signature of Chiang Mai.
I visited Doi Suthep Temple with my family, and it was an unforgettable experience. The temple is absolutely stunning, with beautiful architecture and a peaceful atmosphere that makes you feel instantly calm. The view from the top is incredible — you can see the entire Chiang Mai city spread out below, and it’s truly breathtaking. We had an amazing time exploring the temple grounds, enjoying the cool breeze, and taking in the cultural beauty of the place. A must-visit landmark in Chiang Mai. Highly recommended!
