Visit the ancient ruined city of Wiang Kum Kam on a traditional horse carriage ride, a relaxing and immersive way to explore one of northern Thailand’s most important historical sites. Situated on the wide plains between present-day Chiang Mai and Lamphun, Wiang Kum Kam is believed to be the earliest historical settlement in the Chiang Mai region. Founded by Mon settlers as a satellite town of the Haripoonchai Kingdom, this once-thriving city played a significant role in the early development of the area. As you travel through the site, you will gain insight into the ancient civilization that existed here long before Chiang Mai was established.
During the carriage ride, you will explore the remains of the old town, uncovering ancient structures, archaeological sites, and several historic temples scattered throughout the area. The slow pace of the carriage allows you to fully appreciate the peaceful surroundings while learning about the history, culture, and religious importance of each site. You will have time to stop, explore, and take photos at key locations before continuing your journey through the ruins. After experiencing the heritage and quiet charm of Wiang Kum Kam, the tour concludes with a comfortable transfer back to your hotel, leaving you with a deeper understanding of northern Thailand’s ancient past.

It is a mind retreat for nature lovers! Unfortunately a lot of ladies find this spot quite suitable for taking hilarious photos for their IG, jumping on a bridge and being too loud! Mind your business and let others enjoy this amazing environment.

A wonderful, calm temple; highly recommended. Dress conservatively. Entrance fee for foreigners is 20 THB. The underground Buddha’s have spiritual energy. The stupa is gorgeous. I much prefer the stone material stupas to bright gold. There is a large pond in the back. There are also monks and meditators about that live on site. We took a taxi and were a little challenged getting transportation back to Old Town.

I did a 5-day Vipassana retreat at Wat Umong, a temple over 700 years old, and the experience was absolutely incredible. The place is peaceful and quiet, the ancient ruins are beautiful, and the monks are extremely kind. The alms food is also very nutritive. Everything was perfect — I definitely want to return! I highly recommend it to all my friends. And if you’re traveling to Peru, I also have a travel agency: @dopkertravel — we organize tours to Machu Picchu, Cusco, and all around Peru.

Only visited the outside due to lack of time, but it’s an expansive space with a library, other buildings and the main temple. Entrance is 20 THB! It looks more unique and different than the other temples in the old city square - would recommend! There’s also wild chickens flocking around 🐓

Beautiful temple in the forest outside of Chiang Mai. With tunnels, bats, thousands of chickens, frogs, doves, fish , dogs , cats whatever you can imagine. Beautiful scenery, very green and shady all over. Come here wit Grab for 70 Baht. It's also a nice walk around on a hot sunny day. Can get busy during the day but is very calm in the late afternoon. I really liked it here. A must see for nature lovers.
