Embark on an unforgettable journey into the heart of Sami culture with an intimate reindeer encounter guided by a family deeply rooted in traditional herding. You meet free roaming reindeer in their natural winter environment and learn how the Sami maintain a close connection to the land and animals through every season. Through shared stories and personal experiences, you gain insight into the cultural importance of reindeer, the challenges of modern herding, and the deep respect that guides the Sami in caring for their animals and environment. This is not a staged activity but a genuine glimpse into daily life in the Arctic.

Winter feeding plays a crucial role in reindeer care as heavy snow, ice, and rapid climate changes make natural grazing difficult. This responsible practice ensures the animals survive the harshest months and reflects the resilience and knowledge passed down through generations. By taking part, you experience the rhythms of Sami life while learning about traditions, survival, and harmony with nature. Close encounters with the reindeer combined with stories, customs, and the stunning Arctic landscape create a meaningful experience that deepens understanding of Sami culture and the enduring strength and adaptability required to thrive in this unique environment.

A really authentic and genuine look into Sami culture. You get to explore different islands with a lot of scenic stops along the way. The highlight being the reindeer and sharing of Sami songs. A generous lunch is included.

One of the most authentic and comprehensive Sami experience in Tromso. You get a scenic drive with different photo opportunities, reindeer feeding, bonfire chilling with stories and a free lunch inside a hotel included. The tour is organised by a traditional Sami herder and his family, and we were lucky to meet Reiulf. He was very candid in sharing stories growing up as an indigenous person, and it was very informative listening to his sharing. The reindeer feeding experience was also enjoyable, where we got to learn more about reindeer habits. It was a half-day well spent, where you get to see different sides of Tromso in an intimate group setting, and I high recommend this tour if you want to experience the local Norwegian culture.

I highly recommend this experience! Everything was well-organized and punctual. We started in the city center and drove out toward Sommarøy Island for a quick change before heading to meet the reindeer, with several stops along the way to take in the scenery and snap some photos. They provided suits for those who wanted them, but no shoes (as advertised), so plan accordingly. Our guide was the owner of the reindeer, a true Sami. While his English wasn’t perfect, he communicated well, sharing fascinating insights about his culture and answering all our questions. When we arrived, we were surrounded by reindeer—some were shy and wild, while others were curious and unafraid. As soon as we started feeding them, they rushed over, sniffing and interacting with us. It was an incredible experience. Afterward, we gathered inside a traditional Sami tent around a warm fire, enjoying hot drinks while listening to stories about the Sami people. We also stopped at a beach for pictures, had a delicious buffet lunch, and made it back to the city around 16:00. The guide and his daughter were wonderful—so kind and welcoming to everyone. I’d absolutely do this again!

Mixed Experience with Cultural Highlights & Authentic Sami Insights The Reindeer Sled, Dinner, and Northern Lights Day Trip offers a blend of cultural immersion and Arctic adventure. The highlight was undoubtedly the engaging storytelling by a guide from an ancient Norse family, providing authentic and touching insights into Sami culture. However, the reindeer sledding felt a bit slow and dimly lit, possibly due to the late timing of the tour. Additionally, the absence of the Northern Lights during our visit detracted from the overall experience. The service seemed somewhat off, perhaps because it was the last tour of the day or due to the crowd size but there was definitely a lack of enthusiasm combined with pressure. Despite these aspects, meeting some unique and friendly fellow travelers added a unique and friendly dimension to the trip. You definitely get to meet the best people! —Reda

This is a great Tour. Our guide was very nice and knowledgeable about the Sami culture ( he was Sami himself). The feeding of the reindeer is a fun experience. Many stops to see the fjords and take great pictures. I highly recommend this tour.
