A complete disappointment. I visited during Christmas time, when there was a Christmas market inside, and it felt extremely cheesy. I was genuinely shocked by how unrelated and random the stalls were. A unique cave setting was turned into a low-quality tourist attraction for no good reason. The items being sold felt like those from a small local market—very casual and nothing special or festive. The only thing I liked was the trees on one side decorated with lights. Other than that, it was extremely crowded, to the point where you could barely walk at times. The organization outside was also very poor. There were long queues, and staff directed people left or right without any clear system or explanation. Even though we bought tickets in advance, we were mixed with people without tickets and ended up entering later than our assigned time. Meanwhile, other queues moved faster, and some people without reservations entered before us, even though they arrived later. Despite the reservation system, the inside was overcrowded and uncomfortable. It might be a better place outside the Christmas period, but during this time it was not worth it at all. Not recommended.

Seasonal Christmas market: This is definitely a unique setting. There are quite a few decorations inside, and the cave itself is interesting to walk through. The stalls, though, felt more like a regular Saturday market you’d see in any city. A mix of random items, some Christmas bits here and there, and a few homemade things, but not that festive overall. You can walk through it in about an hour, unless you stop for food or stop to check out the random mixed goods stalls. It would’ve been nicer to see more food stands or places to sit and enjoy the space. Even if the experience isn’t perfect, the entrance fee seems to be more about the unique location and the effort to make it functional. Nice to do once in a while. Valkenburg itself is lovely to walk around, and kids would probably enjoy the lights and decorations.

Visited on the very first day of this season! If you’ve never been here before, then it’s definitely a NO-BRAINER to visit! experience Christmas festivities in a cave set up, which is pretty unique. the cave has a pleasant cool temperature, and this one is more lively that the velvet cave. if you’re only looking for exploring and not shopping, you can easily cover this in an hour. But in most cases you’ll find yourself invested in purchasing something. Compared to Amsterdam, the prices of souvenirs aren’t too bad (some of them were even slightly cheaper). I’ve made a video of my complete experience too! in case you prefer watching you can find it on YouTube 🎥 😄 Pro tip: visit on weekdays, or weekend mornings. I was lucky with the crowd since i was one of the first few visitors in the cave since I visited the very first day.

Visited the Christmas market. A very fun experience. Definitely worth the money. Loved the art pieces for sale inside. Decorations were top notch. Drove all the way from Amsterdam for this and enjoyed my day. Planned to spend around an hour there but ended up spending almost 3 hours. All the photo spots are really nice. Definitely recommended. I have attached the picture of the painting we got.

The Gemeentegrot Christmas Market is definitely one of the most unique Christmas markets I have visited, simply because it takes place inside a historic cave. The cave is filled with beautifully decorated paths and lamps that create a festive and warm atmosphere. The lighting is stunning, and there are plenty of Christmas themed decorations, ornaments, and gifts on display throughout the market. The focus here is more on the shopping experience and the enchanting cave setting than on traditional festive food and drink. Food and drink options are limited, so it does not have the same cozy, culinary atmosphere as some other Christmas markets.
