This tour was one of the highlights of our Iceland trip. My friends and I sent our husbands golfing, and went on this tour together. Our guide, Mar, was absolutely amazing. She was energetic, obviously enjoyed her job, and was knowledgeable when we asked her dozens of questions about the area. We will be talking about this tour for years, definitely a trip to remember!
We hopped a fairy to Vestmannaeyjar off the southern Iceland coast and rolled into our scheduled ATV tour covering most of Haimaey Island's hot spots (pun intended). We went there specifically to see the puffins and all the festivities that go along with watching the bird colonies form throughout the summer months near the Arctic circle. Seeing puffins up close and personal, nesting in the cliffs and hilly burroughs, can be a crap shoot, similar to finding the Northern lights in the winter months, but not here. Our guide Mar (who we ran into later that evening at her recommended favorite dinner spot) was the perfect balance of knowledge, know-how and perspective, adding fun personal accounts of her time on the island. The compelling backstory Mar added at every stop vaulted this tour into Homeric status; the Icelandic storytellers, scripting the nations' history into sagas and folktales, would have been proud. If it's not the breathtaking views that make this a must-do (and would rebook in a heartbeat), then the rush of riding in a pack, new land forming near volcanic vents, the sheer force of the coastal wind or the serenity of the puffin cabin will most certainly reel you in. Well Done!
Our lack of planning to the islands lead to the BEST day ever. We failed to pre-book our ferry tickets which led to us not being able to take our car, quickly realizing that when we arrived we would need some form of transportation to get around. We looked online and were able to walk to Volcano ATV. Joana was working the front desk and said that if we could wait until the first group got back she could take my husband and myself on the Puffin & Volcano Tour and we are so happy we said YES! It was such a fun way to get to see a lot of the island including Elephant Rock, so many puffins, and getting to ride around the volcano area was very cool. Joana was extremely friendly and it was a real pleasure to have her as our guide. Another employee, Mar, came with us during part of the time and took photos and videos! Overall this was a 10/10 experience and we would love to book again next time.
