The wild brown trout in Connemara offer exceptional sport from the season opener in March through to its close at the end of September. Connemara’s many fisheries feature interconnected lakes and rivers, home to Ireland’s native trout. These wild brown trout typically range from one to two pounds in size. The fishing is reliable, with hatches beginning in April and peaking in May and early June. Throughout the summer, caddis, crane flies, and terrestrials keep the trout actively feeding. Due to the acidic nature of Connemara's rivers and lakes, food is limited, which makes the trout eagerly rise to dry flies and readily take wet flies and nymphs. In larger lakes, the "ferox" – larger cannibal brown trout – hunt their smaller counterparts. Your experienced local guide or ghillie will provide expert advice on the best flies to use and lead you to the prime fishing spots along the rivers.
