This three-day basic mountaineering skills course provides a comprehensive introduction to winter mountaineering, combining technical instruction with an overnight stay and summit attempt on Mount Washington. Over the course of three days, participants will learn essential skills including dressing appropriately for winter, packing efficiently, selecting and preparing food, choosing proper gear, and practicing low-impact winter camping techniques. Instruction also covers moving efficiently in winter boots and crampons, climbing low to moderate angled snow and ice terrain, and assessing weather and snow conditions. No previous climbing experience is required, but participants should be prepared for physically demanding activity and variable winter conditions. The first day focuses on technical skills outdoors before returning to town for the evening.
On the second day, participants meet at IMCS to sort and pack gear, plan meals, and prepare for the ascent to Mount Washington. After setting up camp, they will cook dinner and spend the night in anticipation of the summit attempt on day three. The course emphasizes practical application of mountaineering skills, decision-making in winter conditions, and safety awareness. Daily itineraries may vary depending on weather and snow conditions, allowing participants to adapt to real-world mountaineering scenarios. By the end of the course, participants will have gained confidence in winter climbing techniques, campsite management, and outdoor problem solving, providing a strong foundation for future mountaineering adventures.
