McCully Basin offers a backcountry skiing experience rich in history and natural beauty, located inside the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area. Established in 1980, the camp has evolved from simple tents and basic skis into a small yurt village equipped for modern downhill touring. Visitors can enjoy solitude, fresh tracks, and glistening slopes in a pristine mountain setting. The approach to the camp is a gentle four mile trek gaining eighteen hundred feet in elevation, winding through dense forest with only two switchbacks. Once in the basin, the terrain offers a variety of skiing options, including low-angled gladed meadows, broad moderate north-facing alpine bowls, and non-technical summits with occasional black-diamond chutes. The combination of accessible and challenging terrain makes McCully suitable for skiers of varying abilities seeking a backcountry adventure.
Accommodations at McCully Basin include two separate sleeping yurts, each capable of housing up to five guests, outfitted with wood stoves, cots, and foam pads. A kitchen yurt is available with additional cots for after-hours use, and a cold spring water source provides fresh drinking water. This setup allows small groups of up to ten people to enjoy a comfortable and functional base while exploring the surrounding slopes. The camp provides a balance of rustic charm and practicality, ensuring that guests can focus on skiing, enjoying the wilderness, and experiencing the unique atmosphere that has made McCully Basin a favorite destination for backcountry skiers for over four decades.
