McCully Basin Blends History and Backcountry Skiing in Eagle Cap Wilderness

McCully Basin, situated within the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area, is offering a historic backcountry skiing experience that dates back to its establishment in 1980. Over the years, the camp has evolved from simple tent setups into a modest yurt village designed for modern downhill touring. It continues to attract skiers seeking solitude, fresh tracks, and untouched alpine scenery.

The approach to the basin involves a scenic four-mile trek with an elevation gain of approximately 1,800 feet. The trail winds through dense forest with only a couple of switchbacks, gradually opening into expansive mountain terrain. This gradual ascent enhances the sense of isolation and prepares visitors for the wilderness experience ahead.

Once inside the basin, skiers encounter a wide variety of terrain suitable for different skill levels. Options include gentle gladed meadows, moderate north-facing alpine bowls, and non-technical summits, along with occasional black-diamond chutes. This mix of terrain allows both intermediate and advanced skiers to enjoy the area’s natural diversity.

Accommodations include two sleeping yurts equipped with wood stoves, cots, and foam pads, each accommodating up to five guests. A separate kitchen yurt and access to a natural spring water source provide additional convenience for visitors.
