The Kokopelli Trail is a premier bike-packing adventure that stretches over 142 miles, linking the mountain biking hub of Fruita, Colorado, to the iconic destination of Moab, Utah. Riders traverse a mix of singletrack, jeep roads, and occasional paved sections, taking in some of the most stunning scenery in the region. Along the route, cyclists encounter dramatic landscapes including the Colorado River, Yellow Jacket Canyon, View Point Arch, and the La Sal Mountains. The trail is fully self-supported, so planning is essential as there are minimal water sources and no food resupply points. Many riders complete the route in three days, though a more leisurely pace of four to five days is common to fully enjoy the experience. The trail can be ridden from spring through fall, though summer heat can be extreme, and higher elevations may still have snow in early spring or late fall.
The Kokopelli Trail is divided into six distinct segments, each offering unique challenges and terrain. Segment one covers 21 miles from Loma Boat Launch to Rabbit Valley, with singletrack and jeep roads. Segment two runs 34 miles from Rabbit Valley to Cisco Landing, primarily on jeep roads. Segment three covers 20 miles from Cisco Landing to Dewey Bridge, including pavement, singletrack, and a 1,000-foot sandy jeep road climb. Segment four stretches 18 miles from Dewey Bridge to Fisher Valley with rugged gravel climbs. Segment five spans 25 miles from Fisher Valley to Castle Valley Road, featuring 3,500 feet of climbing on jeep roads and a long paved descent. The final segment, 27 miles from Castle Valley Road to Moab, includes a 2,000-foot climb to Mason Draw and a thrilling 4,000-foot descent through singletrack and jeep roads, with the option to finish on the famous Porcupine Rim Classic Trail. Shuttle services are available for Moab to Fruita or Grand Junction, with pricing varying depending on group size and any additional water drop services.
