Kokopelli Trail Offers an Epic Bike-Packing Journey from Colorado to Moab
The Kokopelli Trail is attracting adventurous cyclists with a world-class bike-packing journey stretching more than 142 miles between Fruita, Colorado, and Moab, Utah. The route combines singletrack, jeep roads and paved sections, taking riders through some of the most dramatic landscapes of the American Southwest. With a typical completion time of three days, many cyclists choose a more relaxed four- or five-day itinerary to fully experience the trail.
The journey is entirely self-supported, with no food resupply points along the route and limited water sources. Riders are advised to research reliable water locations before setting out and consider caching supplies, with Rabbit Valley and Dewey Bridge among the popular locations. Camping ranges from established campsites to dispersed options, giving riders flexibility as they progress through the remote terrain.
The six-section route delivers a succession of demanding climbs, technical stretches and spectacular descents. Highlights include views of the Colorado River, Yellow Jacket Canyon, View Point Arch and the La Sal Mountains. The trail reaches more than 8,500 feet in elevation, meaning riders should check snowpack conditions during early spring and late autumn. Summer temperatures can also become extremely hot, while the best riding window generally extends from spring through fall.
The final stages take cyclists through Fisher Valley and the La Sal Mountains before the route descends towards Moab. From Loma Boat Launch to Rabbit Valley, Cisco Landing, Dewey Bridge and beyond, each segment offers a distinct challenge, with the final 27-mile section climbing toward Mason Draw before dropping dramatically into Moab. Riders can also choose to finish via the famous Porcupine Rim Classic trail, making the Kokopelli Trail a demanding but rewarding adventure for experienced bike-packers.
