Upper James River 5-Day Expedition Delivers Challenging 56-Mile Wilderness Adventure
This five-day, four-night river expedition offers an immersive paddling experience covering 56 miles of the Upper James River Water Trail. The journey begins in Buchanan, Virginia, and takes participants through a diverse mix of Class I to Class II+ rapids, scenic mountain views, fishing spots, swimming areas, and remote wilderness campsites along the river corridor.
The trip concludes with the notable whitewater section of the James River Gorge, including Balcony Falls, providing a challenging and memorable finish. A resupply point is available in Buchanan on day three, making it convenient for longer expeditions, and many groups such as Boy Scouts use this route as a qualifying “50-miler” adventure, often combined with river cleanup activities.
Due to the technical nature of the rapids and the remote environment, all groups are carefully screened prior to booking. Prior canoe or kayak experience in Class I to II+ conditions is recommended. Trips cannot end on weekends, and final-day shuttle pickups are scheduled for 11 AM or 1 PM depending on logistics.
The package includes boat rental, paddles, life jackets, safety orientation, river maps, dry bags, water jugs, access to private camping land, and all required shuttle services. This is an unguided expedition, meaning participants paddle independently without on-river staff support. Guests must bring their own food, camping gear, and supplies, and be capable of self-recovery in rapids. Recommended for ages 12 and above with an adult guardian, this journey offers a demanding yet rewarding combination of adventure, wilderness camping, and scenic river exploration.
