Colorado offers an exceptional setting for ice climbing, where ascending something as fleeting as a frozen waterfall becomes both thrilling and achievable. With the guidance of experienced instructors, climbers quickly learn the rhythm and technique required to move confidently on ice, opening the door to year-round climbing opportunities. The state features a wide range of venues, from the popular ice park and expansive backcountry routes in the San Juans near Lake City to more accessible, low-commitment areas in the Front Range. This diversity ensures that every climber can find terrain suited to their skill level and desired level of challenge.
From the very first swing of an ice tool, climbers can progress through structured learning and hands-on practice. Beginners start with the fundamentals—using crampons, handling ice tools, managing safety systems—while more experienced climbers can push themselves on classic multi-pitch climbs like The Sherman Route or explore technical mixed and alpine terrain. With its variety of routes, expert instruction, and breathtaking winter landscapes, Colorado truly offers something for everyone in the world of ice climbing.

The Golden Mountain Guides could not have been more accommodating and helpful. We wanted a Top Rope experience in the 5.9 range, and they selected a perfect location in Boulder Canyon. They also gave us countless suggestions on activities and restaurants in Estes Park and Boulder and helped us navigate the Gov't shutdown at RMNP. Our guide Peter Thomas was amazing. He was competent, knowledgeable (both climbing and the local areas) and everyone climbed until we were exhausted. Everyone at Golden Mountain was flexible with our tight travel window and provided an exceptional experience. Thank you.

We Had an incredible day with Peter from Golden Mountain guides. He led my 10 year old and I up Swanson’s Arete. Despite unseasonably high temps and some loose rock on route we felt super excited and safe through all 5 pitches. He was patient pleasant and super knowledgeable. We learned about the climbing history of the area and native plants on our hike in. He also gave us some great recommendations on places to climb for the rest of our trip. Peter called us the day before our trip to make sure we knew what to expect and help us pick the route that would be the best experience for us. At the end of our trip he even had some drinks on ice for us in the parking lot. We also had a lovely conversation with Ben on the phone. He booked our trip and took the time to really get a sense of what we were looking for in our guide experience. If you are looking for a company to guide any ability and provide a tailored to you experience your sure to remember Golden Mountain Guides is the right call to make.

Came from two time zones away and the ‘flatlands’ to do my first ‘14er’ with my family. We met our Guide (Joey) at the designated meeting place at 4 AM to start our hike. Prior to meeting we had several opportunities to speak with our guide who reached out to us to make sure we were prepared and had the information we needed. On the day of our hike we were easily able to locate Joey after navigating a rough dirt road leading to the trail head and he started by making sure we were able to find a place to park in an already crowded parking area. During the hike he was great at giving tips on how to navigate the trails, even with things that I would have assumed were straightforward, Joey’s advice was valuable, offered with great expertise and insight. Throughout our 7 hour hike up & down he was great at moderating our pace to make sure we had the best chance to summit both peaks on our hike and maximize our enjoyment of the experience, teaching when the opportunity came up and just making great conversation throughout. I would 100% recommend him to anyone seeking to do a mountain hike.

Evan was an amazing guide! He was able to provide an awesome experience for everyone in our group even though we had different skill levels. He was able to make us feel comfortable and challenge us at the same time. If we are back in the area and want to do so climbing, we’d definitely rebook with Evan!

You know how you can hype something up in your head for years. Well I did that with ice climbing. I have been wanting to get into it for many years after sport climbing for some time. And Tristan (our guide) and everyone at Golden Mountain Guides did not disappoint! The experience was amazing as was the customer service, from beginning to end. The owners were amazing to talk to, ready to answer any question a newbie ice climber might have. And Tristan our guide was fantastic! I took 3 of my boys with me (14,15,18) and he and I belayed them while they ice climbed for the first time too. He made sure everything was dialed in and that everyone was safe. This was an experience that not only will I never forget, but one that has me researching ice climbs in my area so I can practice before I return to Colorado to climb again with Tristan!
